Here we go! The last of the mass release for April 1st! Attack No 1 and Lodoss War OVA Blu-rays! Thanks to all those who donated for the Lodoss OVA set.

Sadly, it was unintentional. The grain is monstrous in Attack No. 1. Even getting it to 3GB was an enormous undertaking. Please send your blame in my direction, for I encoded it.
I’m also of the opinion that nearly 1Gb for one episode is way, way, way too much.
Much as I would like to see this vintage series, I will be dropping it. Your previous release of ep 1 from last year (480p at 221,794,979 bytes) was acceptable but at 939,455,194 bytes… Thanks for your efforts but I shall pass this time.
what if you watch and delete ?, me myself will grab it and see how this anime is and then decide.
I’ve already have the 480p version from last year so if I wanted to watch it I could. That’s not the issue here 🙂
Worry not, I got a 3TB hdd…so it will only fill 10% of it.
The worry is if I burn it to BDs then I will be able to save…3, not only 2. Wut? Seriously? Only two eps pr BD? And even getting to do 3GB was hard. Something went wrong.
Possible solution: Try getting some other editors’ help to see if they got a better method you could implement?
I don’t think donors were thinking of that big a size when they were donating. I wasn’t…
Other than that: Wooot it’s out!!! Keep up the great work (except the huge filesize)
I wasn’t expecting the encode to be such a huge undertaking to do… but I’ll try for smaller files in the future, though not too small, as it’ll look bad.
Is Attack No.1 anything like Aim For The Ace?
Besides the fact that the former is about Volleyball and latter Tennis, of course.
Attack No 1 is much more dramatic, not only regarding volley ball. It adds character deaths and serious injuries too.
while Aim for the Ace is closer to shoujo narrative.
Attack No 1 has a lot of character depth. in my opinion it is the best sports anime with girls. Yawara comes close though.
I watched the German dub of Attack no 1. Unfortunately 3 episodes were not broadcasted, one scene was edited out (the death of the mother of 3 rival characters) and a lot of tinkering was made with the name changes of the former socialist countries.
World Tournament takes place in Sofia, Socialist Bulgaria’s capital.
Eg Czechoslovakia was later changed to Czech Rebublic. then Japan plays against Germany, but since at that time there were West and East Germany, it becomes just Germany and they changed the score table.
Soviet Union becomes Russia, etc. It was broadcasted in the early to mid-90s in Germany, so they did everything they could to adjust the political events too.
Hence I hope for a proper release in order to see the edited content.
For a more comedic version of Attack No 1 but with better matches, watch Attacker You! But have a Japanese raw nearby, since the European dubs were heavily censored.
I have the japanese DVDs of Attacker You, I encoded the first 15 episodes and translated them (in fact, I translated the official french subs).
Maybe I’ve found a way for a fansub… wait & see…

Attacker You! must be perhaps the most edited anime series ever.
I laughed so hard when the french version replaced You’s remembrance of her school. in the Japanese version it was the beatings and humiliation from her trainer. In the French version they replaced that memory with that of her meeting with Serge! the French title is one of the most unfitting titles ever. Jeanne et Serge…lol.
the editors must have watched only few episodes. there’s hardly any romance between them later on….
Yes… in the french opening, we see You & So kissing… but it’s a thing You imagines by herself! In fact, it was heavily censored in Italy, then in France.
I had both the Spanish and French version. While the Spanish version is censored too, it shows some scenes the French version omits, even Daimon’s beatings.
but in the later episodes that focus on volley matches, there is no censorship in any version.
Ecchi moments and comments are censored in all versions.
are u will be translated the TV version (Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight) too?
OVAs only. Lodoss TV wasn’t that great.

Even if you release 1 episode per month it will take over 8 and a half years to finish it.
Attack No. 1 will be a long-term project here in L-E. It may take a long, long time, but we’ll see it through to the end.
My face when I go out to buy the licensed DVDs, come back home and see the BDMVs all over the net. Oh well.

Continuing from above 🙂 I prefer to watch anime on a weekly basis so I would wait until I have at 13 or so episodes then add it to my schedule. I don’t mind waiting a year or more until I have enough episodes to start watching. I did that 10 years ago with Yawara and 5 years ago with The Trapp Family Story and I’ll do that with The Three Musketeers, The Wizard of Oz, Yadamon, and I had hoped for Attack No.1
Even with a 2Tb drive, I’m not going to put aside 13Gb (let alone 104Gb for 104 episodes). Even with a 10Mb (soon to be 50Mb) connection. As big an anime fan I may be, it’s still only anime and personally for me, 1080p is pointless (as are files over 250Mb for 25 minutes).
Much as I would like to encourage Live-eviL for releasing these older series I can’t when the options are 1Gb or 3Gb files. But that’s just my opinion, different strokes for different folks, give me a small 480p or 720p file and I would be happy.
I hope these aren’t April’s Fool jokes…

Thanks for the release. The sizes of Attack No. 1 are fine (I know it because I encoded it for a spanish fansub). You don’t have to listen to users who don’t understand about encode. If they don’t want to download it, it’s their problem. The quality will be worse if you raise the crf more (given the filesize and my test encode, it has to be around 25 or more). People need to learn that grainy sources should have large filesizes to retain the quality.
